DESCRIPTION:WHY THE MONTH OF MARCH?\nThe annual March for Meals celebration commemorates the historic day on March 22\, 1972\, when President Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act of 1965 to include a national nutrition program for seniors 60 years and older. This year\, Meals on Wheels programs from across the country are joining forces for the awareness campaign to garner the support needed to ensure these critical programs can continue to address food insecurity and malnutrition\, combat social isolation\, enable independence\, and improve health for years to come. \nPrograms from across the country have celebrated the month of March since 2002 to increase awareness for Meals on Wheels and recruit the support needed to meet rising demand. \n“March is an important time for us to come together to ensure that Meals on Wheels is there for all of our senior neighbors in need\,” said Ellie Hollander\, President and CEO of Meals on Wheels America. “The demand for services is already great and approximately 12\,000 Americans are turning 60 every day. We must maintain and expand the programs that have helped so many get through this unprecedented time in our nation’s history. We can’t do it alone. It takes all of us to keep the nationwide Meals on Wheels movement going.”

DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 17th Annual March for Meals – a month-long\, community-by-community celebration of Meal on Wheels and the vulnerable seniors who rely on the vital service to remain independent at homes – Meals on Wheels of Western Broome will be inviting prominent figures in our area to help package and/or deliver meals to raise awareness for the growing number of seniors facing hunger and isolation\, both serious problems currently impacting our community and the nation at large. \nThe annual March for Meals commemorates the historic day in March 1972 when President Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act of 1965 and established a national nutrition program for seniors 60 years and older. Since 2002\, Meals on Wheels programs from across the country have joined forces for the annual awareness campaign to celebrate this successful public-private partnership and garner the support needed to fill the gap between the seniors served and those still in need.  \nThis event is part of March for Meals Community Champions Week. Between Monday\, March 18 and Friday\, March 22\, Meals on Wheels programs from across the country will invite elected officials\, local celebrities and other prominent figures to deliver meals\, speak out for seniors and raise awareness for the power of Meals on Wheels.
