A few of our dedicated volunteers!

Meals on Wheels of Western Broome is a private not-for-profit dedicated to providing seniors nutritious,   home-delivered meals and daily check-ins to ensure healthy independence.

*At Meals on Wheels of Western Broome a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace is one where all employees and volunteers, whatever their gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, age, sexual orientation or identity, education or disability, feels valued and respected. We provide equal opportunity for employment and advancement in our program.

Volunteer!

Volunteering with Meals on Wheels is a great way to get connected to your community.  It takes only an hour of your day to deliver meals and you can volunteer as frequently as you wish!  Volunteers sign up as either drivers, friendly visitors, or both and work in pairs to deliver nutrition and companionship during the lunch hour.  Volunteer every day, once a week, or even once a month.

Delivering meals is a great fit for teachers, retirees, college students, stay-at-home parents, church groups, and business professionals looking to make a difference during their lunch hour.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, unless accompanied by a parent.  We run a basic background check on all volunteers to help ensure the safety of our clients.

Our meals are delivered between the hours of 11:45 a.m. and 1 p.m., Monday through Friday, throughout Endicott, Endwell, Vestal, Johnson City, and Maine, and generally take about one hour to complete.

The Mary Madore Fund

The Mary Madore Fund

In the 1940’s, Mary Madore prepared and served meals to hundreds of Penn State University students returning from military service.  Mary and her friend Viola made nutritious meals and delicious pies at the Ag Hill Dining Room for 9 years.

In 1970, Mary Belle (Madore) Mitten’s admiration of her mom’s hard work and dedication in PA motivated her to become involved in a service with a very similar mission.  Along with 16 other local women, Mary Belle began a home-delivered meal program dedicated to feeding seniors in Western Broome County.  Inspired by her mother’s work in Pennsylvania providing meals and companionship to those who lacked both, MaryBelle devoted countless hours to the development of our current Meals on Wheels program.  She also delivered meals for many years, both alone and with her husband Hurst, before moving south.

After moving back to Endicott, MaryBelle was still committed to ensuring that every person who needs a meal gets one, believing that her mother’s tireless work should continue through her. Named in her honor, The Mary Madore Fund provides temporary meal assistance to any Western Broome County resident who cannot afford our fee for service, regardless of age.

MaryBelle (Madore) Mitten, known to her friends as the “Wacky Weed Lady”, died as a result of heart failure in her new home in Punta Gorda, Florida. To honor MaryBelle’s memory, her family asked that people “Please pick a bouquet of wildflowers, visit a friend with a hug, forgive a hurt, march for a cause, and tell your family that you LOVE them often!” I am sure it would also please her family if people donated to the Mary Madore Fund at Meals on Wheels of Western Broome.
